Return to Frostgrave

Monday night saw a return to Frostgrave and an opportunity to set up the Shed in a different configuration. The new tables allow the possibility of setting up different tables and with four players we elected to play two games simultaneously. In the end Colin, John, Stephen amnd myself managed three games in the space of three hours.

We started with Level 1 Wizards and agreed that experience , treasure etc would be worked out post event. The plan is to build up some Wizards quickly to replay the monster bash we did a cioupler of years back. This can be found HERE

Apologies for the lack of in game photos but things were rather frantic.

Table 1 - The old Wizards quarter

Table 2: The Bridge of Dragons

A few in game shots

The less said about my new Elementalist Anthrax the betterm, his apprentice Ceefax did a much better job.

Two games this week - we return to the Peninsular for more Napoleonic action on Weds night

More soon & stay safe

Monster Bash Frostgrave Style

Hi Folks

Its been ages since I have played Frostgrave and when my chum John mentioned that he and a friend of his had a session planned for Saturday afternoon I jumped at the chance to join in..

Rather than play out one of the scenarios they had decided on a cooperative game with us three players and our half strength warbands against the random monster table. Over the course of the afternoon the warbands would have to fight their way across the ruined city to other end  - think British Bulldogs.

Each turn the wandering monsters would have a further three added to their number.

It all started off rather well and our half strength teams were able to deal out sufficient damage to those creatures on the board and then the position changed - John rolled a 100 and on toddled the Lich Lord and his retinue. At this point our forces were being sorely tested by several Vampires and Frost Giants !

We quickly agreed the remaining members of the warbands could join in support.  A spirited reseistance by the Lich Lord saw many of Colin's forces bite the dust but successive elemental bolts and bone darts eventually managed to drive the dark Lord from the table.

Only a few photos from the game but great fun and an opportunity to build my ruined city

Until next time

A new Kickstarter to get my teeth into - Massive Darkness

By chance I discovered Cool Mini or Not have just launched a new Kickstarter (end July 7th) called Massive Darkness.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coolminiornot/massive-darkness/posts/1603090

This appears to be a classic Dungeon Hack game with loads of cool minis. With a pledge level of $120 there are a very large number of figures I want to get my hands on.

Cool Mini or Not recently delivered the excellent Blood Rage game and were responsible for Zombicide. I have also backed their 'THE OTHERS' game which I now understand to be shipping shortly. More on this when it arrives towards the end of the summer.

So if you are interested in fantasy style games it is probably worth a gander...remember the pledge is still going so the volume of stuff is likely to grow

More detailed pictures of the great minis coming...

My thoughts on Frostgrave (having played a few times)

As most followers of this blog will know towards the end of last year I hit the phenomena that is Frostgrave big time. A considerable amount of time and money was spent sourcing and building my take on the frozen city and over the Christmas period I finished painting most of the minis I had acquired for the game.

Indeed since the end of November I have been fortunate to play around a dozen games in the frozen city. As of today I now have two elementalists in my Wizard's college (level 12 and level 5) who are very keen to explore the ruins further.

In this short posting I'll try and summarise what I think work about this game and perhaps some of the things that are missing/could be improved.

Having grown up with AD&D in my veins I was so excited about returning to the fantasy space. Aside from my keen interest in Fantasy Warmaster,  I really hoped this would fill that void missing from my old and distant RPG days. To a certain extent it has, the official range of figures are stunning,  and being unfettered by uniforms and paint schemes my fantasy figures can turn out in what ever clothes they want and nobody can say that this isn't right. These have been a joy to paint and the plastic kits are a great addition. I for one can't wait for the plastic Gnoll box to come out.

The building of my City has been a great journey and the praise received from both here on the blog and those that that have played on my boards has made me both proud and determined to do better.

So onto my thoughts of the game...

The casting of Wizards as the chief protagonists in Frostgrave is inspired. If I recall my old dungeoneering days everybody wanted a Wizard but the pain and of risk of getting him to the magical 5th level when he could cast a fireball spell often meant these classes became secondary to the prowess of a fighter or sneaky stealth of the thief.

Frostgrave delivers a whopping 100% on magic; the variety, versatility and sheer scale of the magic spells available coupled with the various schools creates a wealth of choice and different progression. The Magic seamlessly fits into the rest of the games rules (or should it be the other way round?) and as I have said delivers.

I do have concerns that the combat is over simplistic - ultimately any character can wipe out another on a single die roll. The 'spread' of a d20 allows for very little risk to be mitigated when you are planning your raids. I have found in the games that we have played the 'just go for it approach' has won as many times as the 'steady and cautious'.  Maybe I am being a bit unfair but perhaps with so few figures on the table a more complex approach could have been determined when it comes to combat.

I also feel that the range of henchmen is just too broad - why have a Man at Arms, an Infantryman, a Knight and a Templar. Much better to have a 'Fighter Class' that can pick and choose their weapons and armour. I also feel that aside from the standard stats there is very little 'character' in these henchmen. I have said in the past on various forums that I would want to see these classes develop - thieves should be better at climbing and sneaking, Barbarians should be able to go berserk, and Rangers track. How these manifest is up for debate but I am actively discussing this with one of my fellows.

Ultimately Frostgrave is a simple skirmish game, pitting one Wizard against another, with each intent on capturing as many treasure tokens on the board. Its great fun, full of humour and mischief, and a game can be turned around quite quickly. The progression of Wizards is brilliant - my high level Elementalist now only needs a  7 to cast that awesome bolt and the rest of his repertoire is building nicely.

However there is something missing in this game...and perhaps I am going back to my original roots ...and that is the unknown.

Without an umpire, games master etc all the players can see the lay of the land, they know what's on the table and they know that any wandering monsters will be both rare and random. There are no crumbling buildings or traps to watch out for, no hidden surprises, and to be blunt little narrative. Its at this point that I must admit that I have not played the Thaw of the Lich Lord campaign and this may challenge my assumptions.

My current thinking is that these games might indeed need a player to step up and become that games host - to create the scenario and adjudicate it on the board. For example the starting players don't know where the treasure is and have no idea what lies behind that wall.

Come October of this year I am planning on running a multiplayer Frostgrave game at BLAM. This will pit four Wizards fighting it out to secure a hidden artefact. The Winners of each round will then go into a final with the final winner being declared the arch wizard. To prepare for this I'll amost certainly have to create the Wizards and their parties in advance, this will give me the flexibility of starting them off at a higher level. As this progresses I'll post more thoughts on the blog.

In the meantime happy adventuring in the frozen city...

Until next time

This Old Dog does learn new tricks....Frostgrave Warbands

Hi Folks

In one of my previous posts I mentioned that I had mostly finished painting all of the figures I had purchased for Frostgrave, a very satisfying milestone.

Now I am not the greatest painter in the world - typically block paint and then dip. The Army painter dip (I use the strong tone) has been a godsend for painters like me as they tart up poorly painted figures in no time at all. However one of the many criticisms I do receive is that the figures look a little shiny. For years I have liked this look as it reminds me that they are toy soldiers.

However things change. Whilst rummaging around in my paint box I found a pot of matt varnish and I thought what the hell lets have a go on one of the figures. I selected the 'mule' from the last Frostgrave nickstarter. Once the varnish dried I was stunned with the final affect. It was great (at least in my eyes). The combination of the army painter shading and the matt varnish had me hooked.

Apologies for the quality of the photos but these were a bit rushed...

The Mule

There was only one thing for it all the Frostgrave figures would be given the same treatment. Fortunately I had taken some piccies of the un varnished figures for comparative purposes. I hope you agree they look significantly better.

Before Varnish
After Varnish

So here are the rest of the characters and some monsters

Wizards

Men at Arms

Missile Troops

Odds and Sods

More Wizards

So I just need to finish off the cultists and I am done....

Happy New Year from the Shed & the latest in my Frostgrave project

Hi Folks

A belated Happy New Year from the Shed. Hope you all had a great Christmas and some time off with your loved ones.

For my sins mine was sadly game free.

Mrs Shed somehow managed to book every day I wanted to play with relatives etc...and I still haven't been to see the new Star Wars film yet !!

However she was very nice to me this year and under the tree was a big fat Xbox one for my presie. This came complete with Fallout 4 - what a blast ! Ever since Fallout 1 came out this has to be my favourite game series (number 2 is the old Baldurs Gate rpg, and Skyrim number 3))

The weather has also done its best to prevent access to the Shed - the garden is completely waterlogged and just to travel the couple of hundred feet to the end of the garden requires welly boots. All I can say is that us folks in the South seem to have got off lightly compared to those in the north.

Therefore the kitchen table has become my painting space and I am delighted to report that I have finished painting ALL my frostgrave minis.

I'll post up a report on these in the next couple of days once I have done some photos - and I'll be talking about revolution in my painting habits  - more on this soon.

All that is left is the box of cultists to do and then we are done.

However the big news is that I can report that my city is now 90% complete. Just waiting on a few Pegasus hobbies boxes sets to finish off the third board.

I took some photos with the lights on and off in the shed - the off switch photos make the city look far colder !..

Lights on

Lights off - The nearly finished city....about 4ft x 7ft

Some Harry Potter Chess Piece Statues - Some of these are now on sale on ebay

The Chess Pieces make great statues - I bought 12 broken ones off ebay for about £15 - these have now been painted up and I am hoping to recoup some of my expenditure by selling off the ones I don't need. The 28mm Fireforge soldier shows how big they are.

Here's a couple more of these in front of a Pegasus hobbies ruin - This was built using building set 1 and the ruins box set.

These two sets enable me to build this wonderful ruined church, wizards college...whatever

The picture below is the reverse shot of this impressive building.

I also acquired another Building box set 1 and constructed the standard building. The arches can all be taken off to ease storage (or even connected together to create an interesting architectural walkway)

I have gone a bit crazy on these Pegasus buildings and have ordered another big set, another ruin set and another building set 1 to finish off the city with an impressive tower. Sadly building set number 2 appears to be out of production and they are now going for silly money.

Finally I drilled some holes into the plain boards so I could add some trees...coupled with the ruined buildings they look rather good (thanks John for buying these).

So coming up next....

1. Old dogs do learn new tricks - my painting eureka moment

2. The kick off of our Frostgrave campaign

3. The next Shed Wars project - The English Civil War

4. The next blog milestone - 400k hits ! (almost there)

Finally I just wanted to bring to my followers attention a rather interesting You Tube channel I discovered over the Xmas period - if you like terrain this will be up your street. The Terrain Tutor has some very interesting programmes/articles worth a gander at....

You can find him here

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx_aro8CTHw7ZD5H661hC6Q

If by any chance he reads this or you know him please pass on my thanks - I don't do facebook where he resides and since Shedson is the only one who can work you tube I daren't send him a comment on that media.

Finally

A HAPPY and Prosperous New Year to you all
