Hi Folks
Now if you have been following this blog over the last 12 months you will know that I have been focussing much of my attention on desert builds and all things araby..
In addition we have started playing a few pulp games and it has become apparent that I needed some boys in arab wear for these terrain sets. So on a prayer and a wing I started buying up some Arab chaps with guns and swords.
The first to arrive were some figures from Northstar - the range of Arabs in the Artisan Irregular range
http://www.northstarfigures.com/search.php?query=arab+irregulars&page=1
These included infantry, a couple of camel mounted chappies and six sword swinging horsemen.
The second lot to arrive were some Zanzibars
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/darkest-africa/zanzibari-slavers
I also picked up some of Foundry's Sword swinging chaps in Arab gear
The final set were some Tauregs bought from Black Hat Minatures
http://www.blackhat.co.uk/online_shop/product_info.php?cPath=121_209&products_id=2152&osCsid=2db6t8ajb346r6lf5d5qt1pvd3
and here are some photos of these chaps...
In total there are about 45 Infantry, Six Horsemen and Two Camel Riders
More than enough for my Pulp Games and other Colonial Adventures
Whilst painting these I discovered a pack of pulp adventurers I seem to have messed when I painted those - so these were added to the paint pile. These have all been given a uniform of dark blue trousers and grey shirts - imagine they are redcoats without the jackets !
Until next time....

Building a 28mm Modular Tomb part 2
Hi Folks
A few weeks back I started a project in which I was going to convert a number of IKEA boxes into a tomb complex. For the first part of this build head here
Part 1 of this project
Now I have been reliably in formed that the IKEA Moppe boxes are no longer available...can't believe that so many people have used my idea to snap up the remaining stock...but you never know.
I originally bought 3 boxes which would give me the opportunity to build a total of 18 rooms and corridors - with hindsight four would have been better !
In this short post I will be showing you that I have managed to complete a full six rooms.
With all the materials to hand the remaining six rooms took around three hours to complete (excluding drying time)
Clearly six rooms is not enough so I will be cracking on with the next six asap. Unfortunately I have run out of blue foam so waiting on more supplies.
A few folks commented that were these too deep - in hindsight I am inclined to agree so for the next six I am infilling with polystyrene to lift the floors. Ill be creating at least two boxes with steps so their can be a transition between the lower and upper floor levels.
So here are some piccies of the first six rooms still - need to do the door frames but you will get the idea
and here they all are neatly packed away...
Until next time....

28mm Daleks - The Leader added
Hi Folks
Just a short post today.
Firstly can I thank you all for the wonderful comments you have posted so far on this specific project. Its this sot of feedback that not only does wonders for my ego but also pushes me on to finish these tasks.
So when I left you last some 80 Daleks had been painted and were ready for action.
The start of this project can be found here

Of course what they are missing is the creator of the Daleks - Davros. When I started this project I became aware that Black Tree Design actually produced a Davros figure so this was duly ordered along with a number of discounted WW2 German infantry.
link: https://www.blacktreedesign.com/uk/search.php?mode=search&page=1&keep_https=yes
Who is Davros...(source Wikipedia)
Davros is a character from the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. Davros is an archenemy of the Doctor and is the creator of the Doctor's deadliest enemies, the Daleks. Davros is a genius who has mastered many areas of science but also a megalomaniac who believes that through his creations he can become the supreme being and ruler of the Universe. Davros was created by screenwriter Terry Nation.
Davros is from the planet Skaro, whose people, the Kaleds, were engaged in a bitter thousand-year war of attrition with their enemies, the Thals. He is horribly scarred and crippled, a condition that various spin-off media attribute to his laboratory being attacked by a Thal shell. He has one functioning hand and one cybernetic eye mounted on his forehead to take the place of his real eyes, which appear to have been fused shut; for much of his existence he depends completely upon a self-designed mobile life-support chair which encloses the lower half of his body. It would become an obvious inspiration for his eventual design of the Dalek. The condition of the lower half of his body is unknown; he is physically incapable of leaving the chair without dying. Davros's voice, like those of the Daleks, is electronically distorted. His manner of speech is generally soft and contemplative, but when angered or excited he is prone to ranting outbursts that resemble the hysterical, staccatissimo speech of the Daleks
When the figure arrived I soon noticed that he was a lot shorter than the army I had created from the plastic toys. To make matters worse he came on a slotta base. Not too worry a quick conversion was all that was required.
I fixed the metal Davros into a vice and using a hacksaw I cut him in two - at the point where his tray/body meets the chair.
I then took one of my plastic daleks and cut the torso from this.
The two resulting pieces were then fixed together using superglue. I know its a botch job but Davros does at least now look the right height compared to the rest of the army.
Just need to slap some paint on him....

The Scales of Anubis - A Pulp Campaign
Hi Folks
For some time now I have wanted to run a Pulp Campaign and over the weekend I put my thinking cap on and started doing some investigative work on the internet.
The following background, like all good stories has some grains of truth scattered in. The names of the Egyptologists and their histories are all real (according to Wikipedia) and the dates as best I can tell are correct...
Assuming it all works we are due to start next week - stay tuned

For some time now I have wanted to run a Pulp Campaign and over the weekend I put my thinking cap on and started doing some investigative work on the internet.
The following background, like all good stories has some grains of truth scattered in. The names of the Egyptologists and their histories are all real (according to Wikipedia) and the dates as best I can tell are correct...
Assuming it all works we are due to start next week - stay tuned
Back in 1923 the leading American
Egyptologist James Henry Breasted aided Howard Carter to decipher the seals
found in the tomb of Tutankhamun. It was during this investigation that he
first found reference to the Scales of Anubis.
Anubis was the
jackal headed god of Egyptian Mythology. He was the guardian of the entrance to
the afterworld.
One of the chief
roles of Anubis was the "Guardian of the Scales".
In the Book of the
Dead, Anubis is shown performing a measurement that determined
whether the person was worthy of entering the realm of the dead. By weighing
the heart of a deceased person against Ma'at
(or "truth"), who was often represented as an ostrich feather, Anubis
dictated the fate of souls. Souls heavier than a feather would be devoured by Ammit and disappear into
oblivion, and souls lighter than a feather would ascend to a heavenly existence.
The idea that these ‘scales’ could
truly exist confounded Breasted but as he continued his work for the Oriental
institute at the University of Chicago he unearthed more stories surrounding
their actual existence and subsequent disappearance from history.
Those glyphs and texts he could
interpret talked of an insane Pharaoh who was so mad he destroyed the scales
thereby ensuring he could never be judged.
However Breasted struggled with many
of these translations so in early 1933 he shared his findings with two trusted
friends.
James Henry Breasted
Firstly he contacted Battiscombe
Gunn of Oxford University and then secondly Adolf Erman at the
University of Berlin. Both were eminent Egyptologists and experts in their
fields.
Over the next few months the men
shared their interpretations and views and between the three of them a picture
began to emerge. One that could rewrite known history.
One particular text referred to Anubis
as a traveller, and several epithets attached to his name in Egyptian texts and inscriptions referred
to that role. This literally read Anubis was Khenty-imentiu, which means
"foremost of the westerners".
These texts go onto say that the
scales were broken down into several parts and scattered across the world. One
location being the home of Anubis across the western sea.
The final piece of the jigsaw fell
into place when an old tomb in the city of Tanis was uncovered. Although
recently ransacked by robbers, the hieroglyphs confirmed the scattering of the
Scales but it also talked of one piece being held by a Pharaoh known as
Thutmunka . This piece was known as the ‘balance’ and one can only assume that
this was the fulcrum of the scales.
Tanis Ruins
Breasted returned to Egypt in early
1935 to seek out Thutmunka’s tomb. He returned to the states later in the year
apparently none the wiser. However in his last messages to Gunn and Erman he
wrote that was convinced of the scales authenticity.
Could the Scales of Anubis be found
and brought back together ? Were there sufficient clues to make this this
journey possible?
Before Breasted could act further he died on 2nd
December 1935 in New York City, supposedly from a Streptococcus infection after
returning from his last expedition.
He bequeathed copies of his journals, testaments and
notes to Gunn, Erman and the Chicago Institute of Antiquity.
The Chicago Institute of Antiquity (CIA) was the leading
research institute in the States for items of historical significance.
Breasted’s notes soon reached the higher echelons of power in Congress and as
such the US Government began to supply the CIA with sufficient funds and
resources to ensure that ‘interesting’ historic items would not fall into the
wrong hands.
Adolf Erman
In Nazi Germany Adolf Erman’s career as the leading
Egyptologist for the Berlin university came to a sudden end as a result of his
Jewish ancestry. With his notes, texts and ideas seized by the newly formed
Ahnenerbe he found himself alone in a dangerous world.
These notes and documents have now found their way into
Ahnerberbe’s secretive paranormal arm known as the “Order
of the Black Sun” lead by the mysterious Count Vrill, a Prussian
Aristocrat hell bent on delivering the Nazi ideology across the world
Symbol of the Order of the Black Sun
For Battiscombe Gunn his fascination with the occult in
the early part of the century had turned - he saw the danger that the
occult posed when combined with the rhetoric of the Nazi faith. In his leading
role as Professor for Egyptology at Oxford University opened doors to many
senior politicians, in early 1936 he approached His Majesties Government and
suggested that it would be in the interests of the Empire to ensure that the
treasures of the past must not fall into Nazi hands!
By March 1936 Gunn had founded P.I.T.H. - Paranormal Incidents that could Threaten
Humanity.
It is 1936 and the world is marching
towards war. Could such an object as the Scales of Anubis change the course of
history….
**Stop Press**
16th April 1936
Cairo* Earlier today excavators in the
Tomb of Kings discover a new burial chamber..believed to be that of the Pharaoh
Thutmunka. Egyptian authorities are not prepared to disclose exact location
until proper procedures can be put in place.
** end message
The lost tomb
The race is on….
The
Campaigns narrative is simple - the players will be striving to collect
the five pieces that constitute the scales of Anubis. Each game will be part of
this journey. Adventures will be spread across the globe, in different
environments.
Some
games may feature all three major protagonists disclosed in the notes
above…please note there are other interested parties that will feature. Each
game will be principally aimed at the collection of one piece from its current
resting place however as the game develops the players may end up losing pieces
due to the back story that will evolve.
For
example P.I.T.H. may secure one item and place this in the secure vaults of the
British museum. The following week this might be robbed and the item
mysteriously ends up in the hands of the Chicago Institute of Antiquities. I
have a view of where this campaign will go culminating in a grand finale later
in the year.
During
the course of these games the players leagues will develop, gain experience,
equipment and new recruits.
The
Scales have been broken into five parts:
The
Fulcrum
The
Stand
The
Bar
The
Dish of the Heart
The
Dish of the Feather
It
is not known at present what will happen should they then be combined...yet!
The
resting place of each of these is hidden at the beginning of the campaign. Each
item has been scattered across the globe and indeed some may have already be
found and although their purpose is unknown they will be seen as treasures of
antiquity.
At
the beginning of the campaign the players will be converging on the Valley of
the Kings in Egypt, a recent tomb has been discovered that has revealed a
secret chamber beyond that of an already ransacked tomb. Local archaeologists
have announced their find but have refused to identify the whereabouts of the
tomb in question.

Egyptian Ruins..a small terrain project
Having suspended the build on the port for a couple of weeks (I was getting bored painting MDF buildings) I turned my attention to a relatively short project that I had thought about doing when I was building my Egyptian temple.
I needed some ruins for my pulp heros to investigate and crawl across. These are really simple to build and I turned these out in an afternoon - thanks to the super warm Saturday sunshine that sped up the drying time considerably.
To the build...create four squares of hardboard and draw a curve line across the middle.
Cut out the first and then use as a template on the other boards.
You now have eight mini boards that can be reconfigured to make any number of square terrain pieces or stand alone items.
When I build my temple complex last year II acquired a number of mini egyptian statuettes including two of the jackal headed gods - Anubis. These are made of resin and break really easy -= perfect ;-)
I had also purchased a hirst arts Egyptian pylon temple some months back but gave up building this when it proved to be too small. So therefore I ended up with a number of plaster blocks (some embossed with hieroglyphics and symbols).
Finally my good friend Mark had given my some unwanted plaster Egyptian columns
All these items made their way onto the boards. Using an interior adhesive these were glued down
The statues were broken up (using a chisel and a small hammer) and also fixed to the boards
Finally I had acquired a fallen three sided obelisk set from Fenris games at Salute earlier in the year. This to made its way onto the boards.
I wanted these boards to look slightly more unkempt and give the impression that sand had blown across the ruins building ion certain areas. To give the height and an uneven surface a reasonable amount of filler was piled up against the glued down items
Once the filler was dry all the boards got coated in pva and a sand/ballast mix poured over with the excess shaken off.
And onto the painting...
Stage 1 - my matt brown base (pre coloured emulsion paint)
Stage 2 - drybrushed with yellow ochre
Stage 3 - drybrushed with Titanium Buff (creamy white)
Job finished...a few shots of the final boards...
I completely forgot to take pictures of these without minis but have no fear there is a pulp game planned for tomorrow and these do feature on this table...
As you can se this table features the cliffs and is stepped to create two levels...
More very soon
