They were retracing a walk of QE1 in the mid 16th century . They said that only 6% of England was covered in forest at that time , most of the landscape was open fields , with some hedging. Very few stone or brick walls and that no roads in England had been built since the Romans .Note the tenement farms that were either side of the hogsmill were marked by oak trees not Hedging ( from a map dated 1702 ) . The main feature of the English countryside was actually sheep - millions and millions of them .
